If you like to complete home projects yourself, particularly ceramic or porcelain tile, then you should appreciate a magazine such as this one. I find it to be highly informative about both installation techniques, problems, issues, and products, and as the saying goes, “You can learn a lot from a dummy.” Believe me, there is no shortage of learning from the mistakes of others, and frequently you will find a write up in the magazine that will talk about a disaster and how to prevent it in your own home, or place of business.
In my time in the business, I have seen numerous issues, and through numerous schools and training, I have learned how to prevent them from happening as well as fix them after they occur. Perhaps the largest problem that I see on a regular basis is improper coverage of thinset on the back of the tile, insufficient to provide both a bond as well as support for the tile. Both are critical. Without good bond, the tile will release from the substrate, and without good support, the tile can collapse to the floor under normal weight conditions.
The biggest problem for the do-it-yourselfer is the ability to do the job right utilizing all the tips of the trade that come from years of experience. If you are brave enough to try it yourself, I recommend that you study the process before conducting the actual installation. Oh, and I forgot to mention, the second most common issue that i see all the time: failure to read and follow directions. It works every time…
